AI & Legal Technology

Legal AI

Quick Definition

Legal AI is the broad category of artificial intelligence technology used for legal work, including legal research, contract analysis, document review, drafting, e-discovery, compliance, and matter management.

Example Usage

“The law firm adopted legal AI to search case law, review large document sets, summarize contracts, and prepare first drafts, while its attorneys remained responsible for checking the work and making the final legal decisions.”

What Is Legal AI?

Legal AI means artificial intelligence technology designed or used for legal work. It is a broad category that can include legal research tools, contract analysis systems, document review software, drafting assistants, e-discovery technology, matter-management features, predictive analytics, and AI systems that answer legal questions.

Legal AI is broader than the term AI lawyer. An AI lawyer usually describes a user-facing system that behaves like a legal assistant or legal copilot. Legal AI includes that type of product, but it also includes specialized technology used behind the scenes by law firms, legal departments, businesses, courts, researchers, and compliance teams.

What Does Legal AI Do?

Legal work contains large amounts of language, documents, rules, deadlines, and structured information. AI can help process that material more quickly and make it easier to search, compare, summarize, classify, or draft.

The American Bar Association’s Formal Opinion 512 describes a number of AI uses already found in legal practice, including technology-assisted document review, contract analytics, legal research, due diligence, regulatory compliance, and drafting legal documents.

Common Uses of Legal AI

  • Legal research: Finding and summarizing relevant cases, statutes, regulations, and other authorities.
  • Contract analysis: Identifying clauses, risks, obligations, missing terms, and differences between agreements.
  • Document review: Sorting or analyzing large collections of documents for relevance, privilege, or specific information.
  • Drafting: Preparing first drafts of contracts, letters, briefs, summaries, policies, or internal legal documents.
  • E-discovery: Using technology to help review and categorize electronically stored information in litigation.
  • Compliance: Helping teams identify requirements, compare policies, and organize regulatory information.
  • Matter management: Extracting parties, dates, deadlines, amounts, documents, and key facts into a structured workspace.

How Does Legal AI Work?

Legal AI can use several different types of technology. Not every legal AI product works the same way.

Generative AI

Generative AI creates new content in response to instructions. In a legal context, it may explain a legal concept, draft a clause, summarize a case, or produce a first version of a letter.

Retrieval and Search

A legal AI system may search databases of court opinions, statutes, regulations, agency materials, or internal legal documents and retrieve relevant sources before answering a question. Retrieval can help connect an answer to material the user can inspect and verify.

Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing can identify and classify information in legal text, such as parties, dates, obligations, clauses, entities, or document types.

Machine Learning and Analytics

Some legal AI systems analyze patterns in large datasets. These tools may assist with document classification, litigation analytics, risk scoring, or other forms of structured legal analysis.

Legal AI vs. General-Purpose AI

A general-purpose AI system may be able to discuss legal topics, but legal AI is designed around legal workflows, legal data, or legal users.

Legal AI General-Purpose AI
May search legal authorities and legal databases May rely primarily on general training data or broad web information
Can be designed around jurisdiction and matter context May require the user to supply legal context manually
May include contract review, citations, redlining, or legal workflows Usually focuses on general conversation and content generation
Often includes legal-specific controls and terminology Serves many domains rather than law specifically

What Are the Benefits of Legal AI?

Legal AI can reduce the amount of repetitive work required to find, read, compare, summarize, and organize legal information. That can make legal work faster and allow people to spend more time on judgment, negotiation, strategy, or complex analysis.

For individuals and small businesses, legal AI can also make legal information easier to navigate. A user may be able to upload a document, ask what a clause means, identify the important issues, and prepare more informed questions before speaking with an attorney.

What Are the Risks of Legal AI?

Legal AI is not automatically reliable simply because the output sounds professional. Generative systems can produce incorrect facts, invented citations, incomplete analysis, or answers that overlook jurisdiction-specific rules.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology calls confidently generated false or erroneous content confabulation. Its Generative AI Profile identifies confabulation as a risk that can be especially important in consequential decision-making.

Other concerns can include confidentiality, data retention, privacy, outdated legal sources, bias, insufficient context, and excessive reliance on automation.

How Do Lawyers Use Legal AI Responsibly?

Legal professionals remain responsible for their professional obligations when they use AI tools. ABA Formal Opinion 512 emphasizes duties involving competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision, candor, and reasonable fees.

In practice, responsible use may include understanding what a tool can and cannot do, checking important legal authorities, protecting confidential information, reviewing generated work, and making sure a lawyer’s own professional judgment is not replaced by unverified output.

Legal AI, AI Lawyer, and AI Legal Assistant: What Is the Difference?

  • Legal AI: The broad category of artificial intelligence technology used for legal work.
  • AI lawyer: An informal term for an AI system that performs or assists with lawyer-like legal tasks.
  • AI legal assistant: A tool focused on helping a user or legal professional complete legal tasks, research, drafting, review, or organization.

In short: legal AI is the umbrella term. It covers the technology used to analyze legal information, assist legal professionals, automate workflows, and help users understand or work with legal documents and legal questions.
